Normal Contra (NES) Cheats
**** The below cheats are available to use on all games with out the use of a game genie or action replay ****
Konami Code (Start With 30 Lives) – Highlight the number of players, and then press UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, START
Stage Select – (Japanese version only) At the title screen, press and hold Up, Left and the A button. While holding these buttons, press Start and immediately hold Select. If done correctly, the stage select screen should appear.
Hard Difficulty – After you beat the game, the credits roll by and you start over with the remaining lives you had. You will also start with the gun you had. This time around, there will be more enemies. They will also shoot a lot more, and some enemies may have more hit points.
Secret Ending – (Japanese Version) During the ending, before the closing credits starts rolling, press and hold the Select and Start and keep on holding until the credits are over. If done correctly, you will receive a message from Red Falcon, vowing his revenge.
Shoot while ducking – When you enter the Base 1 or 2 levels, you can shoot high while ducking. Hold Up on Controller 2 while Controller 1 is ducking. You will be ducking but your bullets will appear to go high. This may be hard to pull off yourself, so help is recommended.
Aiming Trick – In a single-player game, hold DOWN on Controller 1 and hold UP on Controller 2 to be able to duck while still shooting at standing height.
Take Life From Partner – If you die in a two player game, hold down A and B simultaneously
Sound Test – (Japanese version only) – Hold A and B while pressing START.

Contra Emulator Codes
If you are playing Contra on Emulator (Or another NES emulator which supports cheat codes) there are a ton of cheat codes you can use. You can basically use any of the codes listed under the Action replay codes + Game Genie Codes sections, you simply need to enter the required code as per below.

To active the cheat code you want launch the Emulator application and load your game, Then click on the cheat menu > “Game Genie, Pro-Action Replay Codes”
On the next screen enter the cheat code in “Enter Cheat Code” field, Then add a description and click on add then click ok to close this screen. The cheat code will now be activated, please note with some codes need you to reset the game for the code to activate.
